LODD: San Miguel Fire District - Fire Engineer Richard Pascall

It is with deepest regret that San Miguel Fire Fighters Local 1434 and the San Miguel Fire District announce the passing of Fire Engineer Richard Pascall on October 1, 2010 of melanoma. He was 49 years old.

After spending many summers working in Yellowstone National Park, brother Pascall began his quest to become a firefighter.

He earned his fire science degree at San Diego State University and was hired by the San Miguel Fire District in 1993, after working for the US Forest service for a brief time. He called his job as fire engineer the best job in the world and "every boy's dream".

Throughout his hard-fought battle with melanoma, brother Pascall, along with his wife Kristin McBurney, became advocates for melanoma prevention and for the past three years have participated in and raised funds for the UCSD Walk for Melanoma Awareness. For this reason, they have encouraged and been responsible for friends and family getting annual skin checks.

Brother Pascall is predeceased by his father and best friend, Costas Pascall and his cousin, Milt Paskle. He is survived by his wife Kristen and her son, Ryan McBurney, his mom Lilian Pascall, his brother and sister in-law Nick and Diane Pascall, his brother and sister-in-law Marcus and Sherry Pascall, his sister Jane Pascall, and nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and in-laws from the Pascall, Paskle, and McBurney families.

Brother Pascall is also survived by his friends and brother firefighters who transported him from his home with full honors, accompanied by representatives of San Miguel, Lakeside, Viejas and Alpine Fire Departments. Flags were flown at half staff in his honor.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
