SLO Fire Chief Callahan dies of heart attack

John Callahan, the San Luis Obispo Fire Department Chief, died suddenly of a heart attack Wednesday.
Callahan was appointed chief in 2005, after 32 years in the Los Angeles Fire Department, where he retired as a deputy chief. He was expected to retire from the San Luis Obispo Fire Department in November.
“He was a very senior and experienced fire chief,” San Luis Obispo Mayor Dave Romero said Wednesday. “… I think he did an excellent job while he was here. He was very stable, very knowledgeable and everybody liked him.”

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
