This home on the 3900 block of Maple Tree Drive in Anaheim Hills is one of four set to be demolished during the next six weeks. Caltrans is demolishing the homes because of slow slide damage caused by widening of the 55 Freeway down the slope from the homes.
The California Department of Transportation is heading up the demolition after paying out millions in court settlements with residents along Maple Tree Drive.
Six homes along Maple Tree and two on Circle Haven – the street below – have already been demolished. Relocating residents from those homes, and buying the properties, cost the state more than $11.8 million.
The amount of the settlement to remove residents from the four homes about to be demolished was not immediately available. Caltrans offices were closed Monday for Presidents' Day.
Caltrans sent a flier to residents along Maple Tree indicating that abatement work to remove asbestos and other potential hazardous materials in the homes had been completed and demolition is set to begin as early as 7 a.m. Tuesday. The gradual demolition is expected to continue until April 2.
Once the four homes are razed, only seven homes along the west side of Maple Tree will remain. Residents of at least five of those remaining homes are in court, negotiating with Caltrans.
Residents on the east side of Maple Drive have complained that the slowly vanishing homes make them feel as if they no longer live in a neighborhood.
One of the homeowners in negotiations to be relocated is Charlie Friedhoff, an outspoken critic of Caltrans' handling of the situation.
"I'm headed to court (with Caltrans) on Thursday," Friedhoff said. "So I don't want to say much right now.
"I've put a lot of time and money into that house," he said, pausing to look down the street at his neighbors' homes, several boarded up and surrounded with caution tape. "It's just hard to believe it's all going to be gone."
