Ophir Fire caused by Highway 70 billboard

PALERMO — A malfunctioning highway billboard is believed to be the cause of the June 2008 Ophir Fire, according to a statement released today by Cal Fire-Butte County fire officials.

After an 18-month investigation, fire officials have determined an electrical failure on a Highway 70 billboard ignited the fire, which burned approximately 1,600 acres and destroyed 21 homes June 10, 2008.

The investigation is ongoing.

Fire officials are still determining whether to seek financial compensation for fire suppression costs, or if criminal charges will be pursued.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
