News and Notes: California Lightning Series

Northern California Lightning Series
Update: 1830hrs - NOPS experience light initial attack today. The Lightning Complex on the Santa Clara Unit is 100 percent contained at 200 acres. The Lightning Complex on the Plumas NF is comprised of 15 fires, good progress is being made. Some precipitation is occurring at this time within the GACC.
Update: 0800hrs - Since Saturday there have been over a 1,500 lightning strikes in Northern and Central California. As a result over 81 confirmed fires have sparked in CAL FIRE’s jurisdiction. New fires are likely over the next few days due to the large amount of lightning strikes and lack of precipitation.

Lightning Series Incident Information: 775 Lightning strikes occurred within NOPS area, 221 fell within the Plumas N.F. protection area.

Lightning Started: September 12, 2009 5:00 am

SCU - Santa Clara Unit - 20 fires, at 200 total acres with 35% containment. Forward progress has been stopped on all fires.
CA-SCU Mines Indident, near Mt. Hamilton, no size reported.
LNU - Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit - 9 fires, 10 acres, all contained.
MNU - Mendocino Unit - 2 fires, 11 acres, both contained.
AEU - Amador-Eldorado Unit - 5 fires, 12 total acres, all contained.
TCU - Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit - 7 fires in the unit with 4 contained;
Telegraph Fire near Cooperopolis is 200 acres and fully contained.
San Antonio Fire near Arnold is 5 acres and fully contained.
MMU - Madera-Mariposa-Merced Unit – 2 fires,
Hunter Fire is 3 acres and fully contained
Horseshoe Fire is 1 acre and full containment is expected today.
SKU - Siskiyou Unit - 3 fires, all contained.
TNF - Tahoe National Forest - 6 lightning fires from the lightning yesterday. All fires are contained.
