Twitter is a Down( The Sky is falling) - Major Denial of Service attack

A major DOS attack on Twitter servers this morning has brought Twitter Tweets to a standstill, with barely a tweet or even a twit getting out.

Update: 10:00 am - Twitter still suffering delays and connection errors. Check Twitter Blog for the scoop http://blog.twitter.com/

A hacker attack shut down Twitter on Thursday morning, and Facebook also said it was "looking into" possible site problems.

Exposing the vulnerability of this new and highly popular communication tool now will probably be a good thing for the long term viability of this medium.

With a major test like this fixes will be installed that will improve the system making it more secure and even more robust.

TWITTER IS NOT DEAD - TWITTER HAS A IMPORTANT FUTURE:
Twitter is going to be a major force in future Emergency Public Safety communications,
With major players such as CAL FIRE and the U.S. Forestry just now setting up numerous Twitter accounts.

You can now follow everyone from the CalFireChief at her desk to the TexasCanyon Hotshots discussing a successful firing operation yesterday on Div B with Beardivide hotshots.

All the major California Forest have Twitter accounts now such as ModocNF, LosPadresNF, MendocinoNF and in fact every U.S.F.S region is Twittering, the California Region is R-5 at usfs_r5

Currently many State and National Incident Teams have Twitter accounts.
like socalteam3, ccimt7, RedTeamInfo, NorCalTeam2

And National, State and Local Government Public Information officers such as National Incident Commander ENeitzel or CALFIRE_INFO, SacFirePIO, portlandfirepio and of course LAFD are posting Incident updates in near real time.

Wildland Firefighters on the line such as RaceDezert544, BigWhiteFireDog, inquarters14, nemofightsfire, Oh and don't forget the great one himself smokey_bear Happy 65th Smokey!

Even actually have a discussion and discuss concerns, questions, etc over at LAFDtalk with Los Angeles city fire department PIO's such as the web 2.0 guru Brian Humphrey if he is working at the time.

And always honoring the fallen at NFFF_News

And avid public safety scanner enthusiast such as apollosfyre Fireground, scannerdude, scannerboy02, SoCalFire, DispatchDemon, RES911CUE

And of course @CalFireNews will keep you updated with breaking public safety incident news.

  1. Funny how easily a person can get used to something and then to have it taken away. Exposes the addicts real quick! :-)

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
