BLM: Railroad tunnel trail to re-open

Bizz Johnson Trail Tunnels to Reopen Saturday, Aug. 15

Work to improve two historic railroad tunnels on the Bizz Johnson National Recreation Trail has been completed a month ahead of schedule, and the tunnels will be reopened to the public on Saturday, Aug. 15.

Work crews repaired old timbers, sealed concrete, improved drainage and sealed cracks in the tunnels that were built in 1914, according to Stan Bales, outdoor recreation planner with the Bureau of Land Management’s Eagle Lake Field Office.

“The tunnels are the signature landmarks of the Bizz Johnson Trail,” Bales said. “We are pleased that the contractor, Erick Ammon, Inc. of Salyer, California, completed the work ahead of schedule. There was no alternation of the tunnels’ historic appearance.”

Hikers, bicyclists and runners now have the option of using the tunnels or trails that bypass them.

The Bizz Johnson Trail follows the route of the old Fernley and Lassen Railroad that was used to haul logs, finished lumber, passengers and freight. Use of the line ceased in 1956 and it was legally abandoned in 1978, clearing the way for establishment of the recreational trail connecting Susanville and Westwood.

How fires get their names

Every year in California thousands of wildfires start throughout the state. In most cases, the dispatch center sending the initial resources to a wildland fire will designate a name for the fire, but the first on scene engine or fire official can also name the incident. Fires are usually named for the area in which they start – a geographical location, local landmark, street, lake, mountain, peak, etc. Quickly naming the fire provides responding fire resources with an additional locater, and allows fire officials to track and prioritize incidents by name. For example during the Southern California Fire Siege of 2003, the largest wildland fire in California history, the Cedar Fire in San Diego County, was named after the Cedar Creek Falls area where it started. The destructive Old Fire, which burned during the same time period in San Bernardino County, was named after the road along which it started - Old Waterman Canyon Road.
