RRU: Groundbreaking for the new Riverside County Fire Station

Groundbreaking Ceremony Scheduled for New Lake Mathews Fire Station #4

Riverside County Fire Chief John R. Hawkins, Riverside County District #1 Supervisor Bob Buster, Economic Development Agency, Facilities Management and Western Municipal Water District cordially invite you to attend the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Lake Mathews Fire Station #4 (formerly Cajalco Station #4).

The ceremony will take place on Thursday, July 16, 2009 at 9:00 a.m. at 16453 El Sobrante Road X Mockingbird Canyon Road (TB 775-H2).

At a projected cost of $5 million dollars through funding by Development Impact fees collected through the Countys DIF program and Ordinance 659.6, estimated completion is approximately 12 months. The new, state-of-the art facilities will include a two-apparatus bay, eight-person fire station that is fully expandable to accommodate three fire apparatus and up to a 12 firefighters. Larger and modern facility design and construction will provide environmentally safe living quarters and work area to replace the 2,866 square-foot old Cajalco Fire Station #4 built in 1950.

We have certainly realized the significant cost savings to each agency by the site partnership we have entered, said Riverside County Fire Department Chief, John R. Hawkins.

The unique design of the fire station, to be constructed on shared property with Western Municipal Water District includes a detached 1,300 square-foot room to be utilized for training and meetings. The 9,400 square-foot fire station will provide all essential service requirements placed on new construction, such as separate gender and handicapped restroom/shower facilities, semi-private sleeping quarters, decontamination room, cooking/dining area, physical training room and business offices.

Western is excited to be able to partner with the Riverside County Fire Department on this location that will serve two critical needs for the region, said Western's General Manager, John V. Rossi. The new Operations Center will allow Western to manage day-to-day operations more efficiently as well as better respond to customer needs. Once completed, it will provide the ability to expand based on increased community service levels and ultimately will meet LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
