San Bernardino County firefighters are mourning Cal Fire Assistant Chief Jeff Mellinger, who died July 15 in Palm Desert.
Chief Mellinger, 56, of Yucca Valley, had served as Assistant Chief of the Fenner Canyon Conservation Camp in the Antelope Valley since 1997, according to a news release from Cal Fire.
Chief Mellinger started his career with the United States Forest Service in 1971, transferring to Cal Fire in 1982 and serving as a fire crew captain at the Fenner Canyon Conservation Camp.
He is survived by his wife and two children, three grandchildren, his mother and father, four brothers, and four sisters. Chief Mellinger was preceded in death by his brother DeLane Mellinger.
Visitation: Draper Mortuary at 811 N. Mountain Ave. in Ontario from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday. A Fire Service Memorial will take place at the Immanuel Baptist Church at 28355 E. Baseline in Highland at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, mourners make donations to: the California Firefighters Memorial 17800 Creekside Oaks Dr. Suite 200 Sacramento, CA 95833.
