LBFD - Vehicle Fire / Explosion - Fuel Tanker

Major Fire LBFD - 1746hrs - Long Beach- Ethanol Fuel Tanker

Update: 1 dead - Driver of Tanker truck reportedly killed in fire.
Update: 1815hrs - Burning fuel reportedly entering storm drains and a nearby pumping station, extending fire to downstream manholes.
Update: 1800hrs - Fuel Tanker truck fully involved on freeway with small grass fire extension putting up a large header of smoke in riverbed near the 710/91 interchange.


Location: Long Beach, CA Artesia/91
Resources: 47 firefighters for from LBFD and 17 firefighters from assisting agencies responded to this incident.
IA: Upon arrival Long Beach Engine 12 found a large tanker truck had impacted the side rail of the East bound 91 to the North bound 710 transition road and was fully involved in fire. A huge fire ball enveloped the overpasses above due to the large quantity of ethanol that the tanker was carrying.
Cause: The cause of this tanker accident is currently under investigation.
