Camp Pendleton: Aerial wildland firefighting exercise

Aerial firefighting exercise to take place on Camp Pendleton this Thursday

CAMP PENDLETON- An aerial firefighting exercise involving U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Navy and California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CALFIRE) helicopters to attack a simulated fire will take place from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Thursday, May 7, at Camp Pendleton.

The aerial firefighting exercise is the final event in a three-day wild land firefighting exercise conducted by Marine Corps Installations West, the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, CALFIRE and other regional, state and federal agencies at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar and Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton May 5-7.

The second annual exercise is an element of the Operating Plan developed jointly by the Marine Corps, CALFIRE, and the U.S. Forest Service, Pacific Southwest Region following the 2007 Southern California wildfires. The operating plan was signed in January, 2008.

Helicopter crews from the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, Navy Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 85 and CALFIRE will participate in the exercise. Media will be in a good position to observe both water pickup from a lake and delivery against a simulated fire.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
