New fire management officer for San Bernardino National Forest

Ranger named fire management officer

The district ranger who oversees the area from Crestline to the San Gorgonio Wilderness has been selected as the new fire management officer for the San Bernardino National Forest, according to an agency news release.

Kurt L. Winchester, 54, replaces Chief Michael J. Dietrich, who retires April 3.

Winchester has been ranger for the forest's Mountaintop District since May 2007. He came to the forest from the Plumas National Forest in Northern California where he worked for three years as a special assistant in implementing forest management legislation across three national forests, the release stated.

Winchester received a bachelor's degree in forest management from Utah State University in 1977 and started his career on a Forest Service fire crew for three years in Utah.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
