China: Beijing - Major structure fire - 40-story hotel

Update: Chinese LODD, Reports said 30 people were injured and seven firefighters were hospitalized. One firefighter died.

Beijing China, 40-story hotel office building is on fire.


Location: Mandarin Oriental unfinished luxury hotel - Beijing, China.

TV Coverage shows major fire damage. No injuries reported

Partially occupied building still under construction, next door to China Central Television's landmark headquarters in downtown Beijing. The hotel building is part of China Central Television’s new headquarters, an angular wonder of modernist architecture. The main part of the 44-story CCTV complex did not appear to be damaged. The hotel had been scheduled to open later this year.

IA: 9 p.m. local time Monday - Structure fire started just after being showered with sparks from fireworks as the skies above the Chinese capital were filled with exploding fireworks.
Sizeup: Fire, Smoke showing, Working Fire on multiple floors.
Injuries: There were no reports of deaths or injuries resulting from the fire.
Cause: Fireworks ignited during celebrations of the lantern festival that follows the Lunar New Year suspected as possible cause.
