LA: One way out...Road Closures and Winter Storm warnings

Southern California Freeways and highways buried in snow and ice, Authorities have closed Interstate 5 through the Grapevine due to heavy snow. The 14 Freeway and Interstate 15 also remain shut down.

Road closures
Estimated time for reopening these routes is unknown and dependent on improved weather conditions.

Antelope Valley Freeway (SR-14) in both directions from Soledad Canyon Road to Palmdale Boulevard
State Route 18 at State Route 138
Route 138 at Largo Vista Road, both directions
Interstate 15 through Cajon Pass, Interstate 15 at the 215 Northbound and I-15 diverted to the 138 Freeway.
Golden State Freeway (Interstate 5) through Grapevine, both directions, Interstate 5 at Castaic Northbound and Lebec Southbound.
Highway 14 Northbound and Southbound at Soledad Canyon.
247 now closed - 2.5' of snow!
62 now closed.

Has any research been done on how big of an effect the economy will have on the fire industry?

It is not looking good and we are only in the beginning stages of the recession. We are having some difficulties up here in Philadelphia. How is California?

How fires get their names

Every year in California thousands of wildfires start throughout the state. In most cases, the dispatch center sending the initial resources to a wildland fire will designate a name for the fire, but the first on scene engine or fire official can also name the incident. Fires are usually named for the area in which they start – a geographical location, local landmark, street, lake, mountain, peak, etc. Quickly naming the fire provides responding fire resources with an additional locater, and allows fire officials to track and prioritize incidents by name. For example during the Southern California Fire Siege of 2003, the largest wildland fire in California history, the Cedar Fire in San Diego County, was named after the Cedar Creek Falls area where it started. The destructive Old Fire, which burned during the same time period in San Bernardino County, was named after the road along which it started - Old Waterman Canyon Road.

CAL FIRE Firefighters make up the fire department for 30 of our 58 counties in California and more than 100 local communities.
