Hawaii: Manele Bay Hotel evacuated - 1,000 acres

OT - Wildfires Today - United States Wildland Fire News today:

"Hawaii: Manele Bay Hotel evacuated - Brush fire with structure threat"

Update: 11-17-08 pm- The fire, moved to within a mile of the Four Seasons Resort Lana'i at Manele Bay and forced the evacuation of about 600 guests and area residents. By 4:40 p.m., officials said the fire was not threatening the resort and people who had evacuated were allowed to return.
Over 20 firefighters are monitoring the fire overnight. The firefight will resume tomorrow when helicopters return at daybreak to continue water drops

Hawaiian Islands: A large wildland vegetation fire on Lanai prompted authorities to evacuate the Manele Bay Hotel and nearby residences, Maui County officials said.

IA: The fire started at about noon in the Palawai Basin and is now burning south of Lanai City.
Sizeup: It is currently burning 2 to 3 miles from the Manele Bay Hotel. Winds up to 30 mph are making it difficult to extinguish the fire.
Resources: The Maui Fire Department dispatched about a dozen firefighters from Maui to help fight the fire. Maui fire is also sending its helicopter and supplies.
Weather: Winds 25-30 miles per hour with some high gusts are affecting the firefight.
Notes: Maui County officials said there is also a power outage, How many residents are affected is unknown."

How fires get their names

Every year in California thousands of wildfires start throughout the state. In most cases, the dispatch center sending the initial resources to a wildland fire will designate a name for the fire, but the first on scene engine or fire official can also name the incident. Fires are usually named for the area in which they start – a geographical location, local landmark, street, lake, mountain, peak, etc. Quickly naming the fire provides responding fire resources with an additional locater, and allows fire officials to track and prioritize incidents by name. For example during the Southern California Fire Siege of 2003, the largest wildland fire in California history, the Cedar Fire in San Diego County, was named after the Cedar Creek Falls area where it started. The destructive Old Fire, which burned during the same time period in San Bernardino County, was named after the road along which it started - Old Waterman Canyon Road.
