Arson investigators said they found something suspicious near the fire's ignition point at a shooting range in Little Tujunga Canyon.
The U.S. Forest Service gives no other details about how the fire started. It burned more than 4,800 acres, much of it near the community of Lake View Terrace in the San Fernando Valley.
Although preliminary findings indicated the blaze was caused by a vehicle, no further information was available, said Sherry Rollman, a spokeswoman for the Angeles National Forest.
The fire origin: Bottom of a small canyon about a half-mile off Little Tujunga Road near the Marek Truck Trail in the Angeles National Forest.
Fatality: A homeless man and his dog were killed in the blaze when their makeshift shelter caught fire. The man has not yet been identified by the Los Angeles County coroner's office.
Structures: 40 residences, including 38 at the Skyview Terrace Mobile Home Park.
The cost: $4 million for the agencies involved, including the Forest Service, the Los Angeles County and city fire departments and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
