San Francisco Earthquake Preparedness Drill

Mayor Newsom Announces the First Annual Citywide Earthquake Preparedness Drill

10/17/08 - On the 19th anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake, Mayor Gavin Newsom today announced that the first annual citywide earthquake preparedness drill will take place on Tuesday, October 21.

The drill, Shake Up San Francisco, is aimed at highlighting our earthquake risk and promoting emergency preparedness. The drill coincides with the 140th anniversary of the 1868 Hayward earthquake, for which a variety of events are planned throughout the Bay Area. To date, approximately 175,000 people are expected to participate in the drill.

"40 years ago, the Bay Area suffered a catastrophic earthquake on the Hayward fault," said Mayor Newsom. "The citywide earthquake drill is a chance for all of us to become better prepared, for the next big one. It will remind all of us to practice what to do after an earthquake, check disaster supplies, know how to shut off utilities, and, to take time to review our family and work emergency plans."

Shake Up San Francisco consists of numerous small, independent drills held by City departments, private businesses, non-profits, schools and individuals. The approximately 150 schools of the San Francisco Unified School District will hold a Drop, Cover and Hold drill to practice what students and employees should do when an earthquake hits.

Mayor Newsom encourages residents to use October 21 to get prepared by:

  • Organizing a Drop, Cover and Hold drill
  • Creating a family emergency plan
  • Checking disaster supplies and replacing expired items
  • Activating the initial steps of an organization’s emergency plan
  • Registering with www.alertsf.org to receive disaster information on text-enabled devices

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
