SANTA CATALINA ISLAND - Three people were killed and one person injured Monday after the private plane they were in crashed near the airport on Santa Catalina Island.

The survivor was transported to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. The extent of that person's injuries was unknown.

Los Angeles County firefighters were dispatched to the scene at 1:24 p.m., where they found the plane fully engulfed in flames.

The fire burned 1 1/2 acres before being extinguished by firefighters, said Los Angeles County Fire Inspector James Barnes.

According to Barnes, the cause of the crash and the time, during takeoff or landing, was unknown.

The cause is still under investigation. No names were released.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
