EDIS: Santa Ana winds through Tuesday

[EDIS] Santa Ana winds through Tuesday across most of Ventura and Los Angeles Counties.

STRONG OFFSHORE FLOW WILL CREATE GUSTY NORTHEAST WINDS ACROSS MOST OF VENTURA AND LOS ANGELES COUNTIES THROUGH TUESDAY. WINDS ABOVE ADVISORY LEVELS HAVE ALREADY BEGUN IN THE MOUNTAINS AND THE WIND ADVISORY HAS BEEN EXTENDED THROUGH NOON TUESDAY. ELSEWHERE...WINDS TODAY WILL REMAIN MOSTLY BELOW ADVISORY LEVELS...BUT ARE EXPECTED TO INCREASE EARLY MONDAY MORNING WHEN WIND ADVISORIES WILL LIKELY BE EXPANDED TO COVER MOST OF THE REMAINDER OF VENTURA AND LOS ANGELES COUNTIES. ...WIND ADVISORY NOW IN EFFECT UNTIL 12 PM PDT TUESDAY... THE WIND ADVISORY IS NOW IN EFFECT UNTIL 12 PM PDT TUESDAY. NORTHERLY WINDS 25 TO 35 MPH WITH GUSTS TO 55 MPH WILL OCCUR THROUGH PASSES AND CANYONS THROUGH TUESDAY. WINDS WILL BRIEFLY DIMINISH THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING BEFORE INCREASING AGAIN LATER TONIGHT AND MONDAY MORNING. ISOLATED WIND GUSTS UP TO 65 MPH ARE POSSIBLE THROUGH THE FAVORED PASSES AND CANYONS MONDAY AND TUESDAY MORNINGS.

How fires get their names

Every year in California thousands of wildfires start throughout the state. In most cases, the dispatch center sending the initial resources to a wildland fire will designate a name for the fire, but the first on scene engine or fire official can also name the incident. Fires are usually named for the area in which they start – a geographical location, local landmark, street, lake, mountain, peak, etc. Quickly naming the fire provides responding fire resources with an additional locater, and allows fire officials to track and prioritize incidents by name. For example during the Southern California Fire Siege of 2003, the largest wildland fire in California history, the Cedar Fire in San Diego County, was named after the Cedar Creek Falls area where it started. The destructive Old Fire, which burned during the same time period in San Bernardino County, was named after the road along which it started - Old Waterman Canyon Road.
