Eastern Sierra fire restrictions lifted

Inyo National Forest

Oct. 17, 2008 - Officials from the Inyo National Forest, Bishop Field Office of the Bureau of Land Management and CAL FIRE announced today that Eastern Sierra fire restrictions put into place earlier this year are lifted as of today, October 17, 2008.

The cancellation of fire restrictions is valid on lands administered by Inyo National Forest and Bishop Field Office BLM. CAL FIRE fire restrictions and burning permits in Inyo and Mono Counties are valid on private and state-owned lands. Fire restrictions on the Bridgeport Ranger District of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest were lifted on Wednesday, October 1, 2008.

At this time the land management agencies are comfortable lifting the fire restrictions; however they urge the public to continue to use extreme caution with anything that could start a fire such as residential burning, smoking, barbecues or campfires. Conditions are still dry due to the lack of precipitation throughout the summer season, and fall winds could cause real problems if a wildfire got started.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
