Update: 10-09-8 05:30hrs - 1,000+ acres 70% By daybreak, the fire had slowed considerably on three sides and all roads and gates on the base were opened and power was fully restored, base officials said. Smoke and ash was reported as far south as Solana Beach and was seen in Orange County. In Riverside County people reported that ash was falling from the sky.

Location: North of San Diego - Camp Pendleton range 401 on a training ground in the southwest reaches of the Oceanside-area Marine Corps base, between the air station and main side of the base near the golf course.
IA: 15:30hrs - 25 acres and running with large impressive header, the fire is making some good runs and is not within a impact area.
Cause: The cause was unknown, though routine weapon training often sparks brush fires on the base.
Evacuations: Camp Pendleton base golf course was evacuated as a precaution, No structures threatened.
Resources: 3 type 3 strike teams on order

Air: Cal Fire, the U.S. Forest Service and the Sheriff's Department had a total of 10 aircraft fighting the fire, both helicopters and fixed-wing tankers – including two county contract Bombardier CL-415 "Super Scooper" Air Tanker planes from Canada which skim along the sea surface pulling water from the ocean.

Note: Camp Pendleton, one of the largest bases in the country, takes up 125,000 acres in northern San Diego County. It is home to the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force. The Marine Corps established the base in 1942.
