Initial attack activity was light across the nation. Large fire activity continues in Oregon where six wildland fires are burning about 23,000 acres. Firefighters contained four fires yesterday, two in California, and one each in Idaho and Nevada.

Firefighters are positioned to help support the aftermath of Hurricane Ike. Teams are stationed in Galveston, Texas; Beaumont, Texas; Florida; and Jackson, Mississippi.

Weather Discussion: Thunderstorm activity today will be generally over the eastern Great Basin and Rockies. Temperatures will gradually cool from the west today and Friday along with increasing humidity. Another low pressure will move into northern California on Friday with widely scattered showers and wet thunderstorms over northern California, Oregon and the Great Basin.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
