Ex- Riverside County Fire Department manager pleads guilty to embezzlement

RIVERSIDE, Calif.- A former Riverside County Fire Department communications manager is facing more than seven years in prison for his role in a $1.2 million embezzlement scheme.

Michael Burton entered guilty pleas Monday to 14 counts, including embezzlement, contracting with companies in which he had a financial interest and misappropriation of funds.

Burton and co-defendant Steven Vaughn, a retired sheriff's lieutenant who ran a radio communications business, were arrested last year.

Cash and county property, including vehicles and computers, were allegedly taken as well as more than $230,000 in state retirement funds.

Vaughn's preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 1

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
