Volunteer Firefighters Arrested for Starting Fires

Two volunteer firefighters are behind bars, accused of starting nearly 30 fires in Fresno and Kings County.

According to Cal-Fire, one of the fires they are suspected of starting destroyed an old clubhouse worth $750,000 at the Kings Country Club.

The two suspects are members of the Laton Volunteer Fire Department.

29-year-old Christopher Furtado and 23-year-old Teddy Lee are both facing arson charges.

More information about the arrests will be released later Tuesday afternoon when the Kings County Sheriff's Department meets with the media at 3:30 PM.

  1. 30 fires? Good grief! Those 2 idiots apparently wanted some "overtime" for their paychecks, didn't they? How stupid they were. And how lucky they were that no one was hurt... (Hopefully!)

  2. Volunteers don't GET overtime. They don't get paid.

This is yet another reason why volunteer departments need to do background checks and psychs on their members.

  4. Many years ago, my husband got his start in the fire service on a "volunteer" fire department. He DID get paid. X amount of dollars for showing up for training and X amount of dollars for showing up and fighting a fire.

I misworded my comment, apparently. It wasn't "overtime" precisely, but the fellows on that long ago fire department that my husband (at the time) belonged to referred to their pay from the department as "overtime".

I'll have to walk around the corner to the "volunteer" department in my little town and ask the fire chief if the "volunteers" get paid here.

  5. Ok, I just got back home from a stroll over to the next block where our little fire department and post office are. No one was "home" at the fire department. One engine is out and about, so there was no one there to talk to.

But, our postmistress used to be on the board for the fire department so I stopped in there to have a chat with her. Yes, the "volunteers" for this small department DO get paid. They get paid for every fire they go to and help fight. They get paid for every rescue call they go out on. Etc, etc.

  6. Those two "idiots" have apparently been released. Guilty until proven innocent?

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
