Cemetary Fire Out, Downsized to 30 Acres, Deemed Arson Fire

Firefighters are mopping up at the scene of a 30-acre wildfire that briefly threatened several homes in the hills above Banning in eastern Riverside County.

Riverside County Fire Capt. Fernando Herrera says the blaze was deliberately set at four places, apparently by juveniles. No arrests have been made.

The blaze briefly threatened about 30 homes early Monday but firefighters were able to knock the flames down.

Herrera says crews will stay on scene for much of the day, making sure there are no stray embers.

Banning is in the San Gorgonio Pass, 85 miles east of Los Angeles and 25 miles west of Palm Springs.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
