Fire season to begin today in Santa Clara, Contra Costa and Alameda counties and west of Interstate Highway 5 in Stanislaus and San Joaquin counties
All open burning permits will be suspended in areas under contract to CAL FIRE.
SANTA CLARA (CFN) ― The CAL FIRE Santa Clara Unit (SCU) has announced that fire season will begin today in Santa Clara, Contra Costa and Alameda counties and the remainder of the unit west of Interstate 5 in San Joaquin and Stanislaus County.
All open burning permits will be suspended in areas under contract to the agency.
The start of fire season varies each year throughout the state and is based on weather conditions, vegetation growth, moisture, and increased fire activity.
To respond to local conditions, unit chiefs hire seasonal firefighters, increase initial equipment dispatch levels for wildland fires and operate fire response facilities at all times.
Agriculture, land management, fire training and other industrial-type burning may continue if a Cal Fire official inspects the burn site and issues a permit.
In addition to Santa Clara, Contra Costa and Alameda counties, fire season will begin Monday in certain areas west of Interstate Highway 5 in Stanislaus and San Joaquin counties.
Campfires are allowed in designated campgrounds and in established facilities on private property with permission from the jurisdictional authority.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.
