Fremont Fire employee struck

On April 21 at about 4:40 p.m., Fremont police were called to an assault with a deadly weapon report at Fremont Fire Station No. 1 at 4200 Mowry Ave.

The victim, a Fremont Fire Department Battalion Chief Rich Dickenson, reported that he had parked his department vehicle inside the station's garage when the suspect, later identified as 31-year-old Newark resident Larry Rapiz, allegedly drove his vehicle up to the open doors and parked there too, police said.

The victim told Rapiz to move the vehicle, but the suspect ignored him and proceeded to have a conversation on his cellular phone, police said.

The victim warned Rapiz he would call the police, and as he walked to the front of the suspect's car, Rapiz allegedly struck the victim with the vehicle and fled.

Patrolling officers observed Rapiz driving westbound on Mowry Avenue and began a pursuit, police said.

Rapiz led officers to Selma Avenue and Burnside Drive, where he was ordered out of the vehicle. Rapiz allegedly ignored the officers' commands, police said.

After a short argument, Rapiz exited the vehicle and was ordered to the ground. Rapiz only went to his knees, ignoring commands to lie down on his stomach, police said.

Officers dispatched a police dog, and Rapiz was bitten on his left arm. Rapiz continued to fight with officers, police said.

Rapiz was finally detained, and was taken to a local hospital for a sprained right hand and the dog bite, police said.

He was then transported to Santa Rita County Jail in Dublin on charges of drunken driving, assault with a deadly weapon, obstruction and resisting arrest, he will be issued his sign there! Fremont police said.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
