Air Tankers To Be Stationed This Weekend in Ramona and Hemet

Anderson had called on Cal Fire to make tankers available year round in San Diego county

In response to Assemblyman Joel Anderson’s call last week for immediate stationing of air tankers in San Diego County, Cal Fire has decided to place one air tanker in Ramona and one in Hemet this Friday through Sunday. Previously, Cal Fire had indicated it would not station air tankers until May 1, 2008.

“Wildfires don’t read a calendar,” said Assemblyman Anderson. “While this is a good first step, Cal Fire is currently planning to remove the resources on Monday, which will leave the region vulnerable again.”

Last Friday two brush fires broke out in San Diego County; one in Fallbrook near camp Pendleton and one near the Mexican border. Assemblyman Anderson’s office was informed by local fire officials that calls for air tanker support were rebuffed by CAL FIRE officials, who said that air tankers would not be made available until May 1, 2008.

“Air tankers should be available year-round to protect lives and property,” said Anderson.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
