SAR - Green Valley Lake - Search Continues Day 5

The search for part time resident 62-year-old former school teacher Dean Christy continues with additional out of area Search and Rescue Teams arriving, The teams are utilizing the San Bernardino Sheriffs helicopters and San Bernardino County Fire Snow Cats to search a expanding area around Green Valley Lake.

Mr Cristy left his home for a short hike last Friday when he became disorientated in a fog that descended on his area, He used his cell phone twice to call for help because he was lost and was last in cell phone contact with rescuers early Saturday morning around 1:00 am when it was believed the cell phone batteries gave out.

SAR RESCUEThe next day severe snow storms enveloped the area leaving a few feet of snow in the area before clearing early Monday morning.

Searchers have not given up hope that Mr. Cristy a very experienced hiker will be discovered alive in this very rugged snow bound mountainous terrain...

"Conditions in the search area are extremely severe," according to Michael Jones from the San Diego Mountain Rescue unit. "The snow is extremely hard in the morning and it's hard to move with all the gear we bring."

One of the newest search teams working the area includes a five-person team from the Nordic Ski Team (national ski team from Southern California).
They concentrated their search on Wednesday in the Crafts Peak Road area, north of Little Green Valley.

Single person tracks were spotted near Forest Service Road 2n13 Wednesday afternoon and crews were shuttled into the area by snow cats operated by San Bernardino County Fire personnel.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
