Deadlines Extended For California Wildfire Victims

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has announced that taxpayers within the California disaster areas – Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernadino, San Diego, Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties will have until January 31, 2008 to file returns and pay taxes. The extended deadline applies to items due after October 21, 2007, when the fires began. This includes Form 941, normally due October 31 and estimates due January 15. In addition, the IRS will waive various failure to pay and failure to file penalties.

Taxpayers entitled to relief include:

  • Individual whose residence is located in designated county
  • Businesses located in designated county
  • Individual or business whose records were located in disaster area
  • Applies to estates and trusts
  • Applies to spouses of affected individuals

The IRS has set up a hotline 1-866-562-5227 to respond to taxpayer’s inquiry. More information on relief is posted on the IRS website.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
