Board makes Cole fire chief
Paul Cole was named chief of the Coastside Fire Protection District Tuesday night, removing the "acting" qualifier that has been affixed to his title since August of 2006.
Board President Gary Burke said the board approved Cole's appointment in a 7-2 vote at its regularly scheduled meeting. Cole's salary also drops significantly from the combined paycheck he had been taking home as a division chief and the acting fire chief. In his prior role, Cole earned $225,000 per year for pulling double duty. Acting solely as fire chief, he now makes $162,000 per year.
Despite the pay cut, the official appointment as chief is an unequivocal promotion for Cole, which Burke said was well deserved. "In fact, I'm somewhat embarrassed it didn't happen earlier," he said.
Cole's contract also stipulates that he will become a division chief for CalFire if the proposed state contract survives the courts. That contract has been contested by the firefighters' union. The court is due to hear oral arguments in January.
