ZACA FIRE, Overview as of Monday August 20th

ZACA FIRE, SANTA BARBARA COUNTY - Summary Update
Monday, August 20, 2007

  • The Zaca Two Fire in Santa Barbara County, which began on July 4, 2007, has burned more than 199,588 acres and is 75 percent contained. It is currently burning northeast of Buellton in the Los Padres National Forest.
  • The Governor declared a state of emergency for Santa Barbara County on August 3 due to the fire.
  • On August 19 the Governor declared an additional state of emergency for Ventura County when the fire moved east towards Highway 33 and became established in Deal and Rancho Nuevo Canyons in the Dick Smith Wilderness. This also prompted the Ventura County Sheriff to issue a Precautionary Evacuation notification for residents along the west side of Highway 33 from the Ventura/Santa Barbara County Line to Pine Mountain Summit. Precautionary Evacuation notices are not evacuation orders; they are notices to residents that evacuation orders could be issued.
  • An additional Evacuation Warning was issued for East Camino Cielo Road from Gibraltar Road east to the Ventura County Line, including Gibraltar Reservoir and Jameson Lake.
  • Paradise Road, Los Prietos Boys Camp, and the Rancho Oso Guest Ranch remain under previously issued Evacuation Warnings.
  • The Santa Ynez River Recreation Area, Santa Ynez River Road campgrounds, day use areas and trailheads remain closed. The expanded closure of the Los Padres National Forest remains in effect.
  • There are currently no evacuation orders in effect.
  • Santa Barbara County is working with Ventura and Kern Counties regarding planning for the Highway 33 corridor area and potential shelters.
  • Incident Commanders are working with the California Highway Patrol in conjunction with Santa Barbara and Ventura County Sheriff Offices to develop a traffic closure plan.
  • Hwy 33 is currently closed between Wheeler Gorge and Ventucopa to all except to local traffic. Starting on Sunday, August 19, this section of Hwy 33 will be closed to all traffic, including residents.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
