Mayor To Name Barry Chief Of LA Fire Department

Douglas L. Barry the chief of the

Los Angeles Fire Department

The Mayor will make history Tuesday when he names Douglas L. Barry the first black chief of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Barry has led the Fire Department on an interim basis since former Chief William Bamattre stepped down Jan. 1 following the publication of audits that documented inappropriate behavior within the department, and fallout from a discrimination lawsuit.

Barry joined the department in 1975, working his way up the ranks as firefighter, engineer, battalion chief, chief of staff and assistant chief.The married father of three is a Rancho Palos Verdes resident who was born and raised in the South Bay and attended Narbonne High School, Los Angeles Harbor College and Cal State Long Beach.

Chief Barry most recently served as Assistant Fire Marshal, managing the day-to-day operations of the Fire Prevention Bureau, which includes inspections of high-rise and commercial buildings, brush and hazardous materials processors.

Chief Barry was born and raised in the South Bay, attending Narbonne High School, L.A. Harbor College, and California State University, Long Beach. He is married and has three adult daughters.

Chief Barry has earned the respect and support of not only his fellow Firefighters, but also his community, serving as Treasurer/Trustee and Deacon of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church in San Pedro
