A motorist in Oakland who swerved unexpectedly and knocked a fire hydrant from its moorings tried in vain to save the life of a passerby on Thursday, who was struck in the face by the airborne hydrant.
Around 5:50 p.m., Oakland resident Humberto Hernandez, 24, had been walking in the 900 block of 98th Avenue with his wife, Alameda County coroner's investigator Damon Wilson said.
A motorist who was swerving to avoid a sharp object, or whose vehicle had just had a flat tire, struck the hydrant and the force of the water pressure propelled the heavy device at the victim.
Afterward the woman driving the vehicle attempted to resuscitate the victim. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital."

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.
