CONCORD - Fire crews have contained a fast-moving grass fire that burned more than 50 acres at the Concord Naval Weapons Station, authorities said.

Weapons station fire teams and Contra Costa Fire district crews now are mopping up and investigating the cause of the wildland fire that broke out at the Weapons Station at about 10:20 a.m., said Contra Costa Fire Marshal Richard Carpenter.

The two-alarm fire covered roughly 50 acres and was pushing south toward Nichols Road, before crews extinguished the blaze around 1:30 p.m., Carpenter said.

Weapons Naval Station fire teams called for assistance from Contra Costa Fire District after the initial small grass fire at the facility quickly spread out of control shortly before 11 a.m.

Fire teams from Cal Fire and an East Bay Regional Parks helicopter also assisted with the wildland blaze.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
