News and Notes: California Fire Situation 09-01-09

Station Fire - Mount Wilson last night

Notes from the Mount Wilson Observatory: Monday, 1 Sep 09, 10:10 am PDT - Some good news. U.S. Forest Servie Fire Dispatch has informed us that as of 9:40 this morning ground crews were back at the Observatory.

As of 8:00 am, air tankers were back in operation. The dispatcher expressed his opinion to Dave that as long as the fire continues to press the mountain from one direction "you are going to make it."

Furthermore, there is some light rain developing in places in the Los Angeles basin, and there is a possibility for some thunderstorm activity that could lead to dry lightning.

The humidity is up and the temperature is a bit lower, so, all in all, things are looking more promising than they have in the last few days.

  3. That right,i saw that during the last fires too. What i dont understand is with all the damage and cost of fires why dont they make cigaretts smoking in cars ilegal.

No way you can get agencies to do zip.
You can prosecute them ypurself, but unless you took their pic to identify them and/or you have a witness to corrobrate ,you dont have a chance.
These are the cracks in our system that allow thiss to continue.
Ive run into this issue when I have caught people dumping their trash on private property.
Mail with id on it isnt enough.
I was told by sherrif what I mentioned above.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
