The Fallen: Iron 44 Fallen Firefighters Anniversary

Iron 44 Fallen Firefighter Remembrance

Anniversary of LODD: Nine Firefighters who died on the Iron Complex at Helispot 44 will be forever remembered.

Two pilots: James Ramage, 63, of Redding. Ramage, hired in 1984 as the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection's first helicopter pilot, was working as a check pilot for the Forest Service aboard the Sikorsky S-61N that crashed and burned soon after lifting off from a remote mountain ridgetop.

Copter co-pilot Roark Schwanenberg, 54, of Lostine, Ore., worked for Carson Helicopters, the Pennsylvania-based firm that owned the downed Sikorsky.(No photo found)

Seven Firefighters: Ten Grayback Forestry firefighters were on board when a helicopter went down near Junction City, Calif. on August 5, 2008. Three of the ten survived.
Recovery efforts were complicated by the remote location, extreme terrain and the ongoing wildfire in the forest.

  2. And as brother of Scott Charlson, it's always nice to know that other people still remember what happened that day.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
