The Indians Fire (CA-LPF01491) updated 06-10-08 - 0900hrs

Current sizeup: Fire is currently 1,196 acres, 8% contained.
Incident command: Smith's IMT has assumed command of the fire.
Evacuations: 15 summer cabins in the Santa Lucia tract remain evacuated, as a precautionary measure.

Summary:
Fire behavior: There was slow but continuous growth of the fire through the night. Multiple spots on the east flank have grown together to approximately 100 acres. The northern portion of the fire is holding.
Major problems and concerns: Steep terrain, limited access, heavy fuel loading, drought conditions. Growth Potential - High
Planned actions: Suppression efforts will continue in all areas of the fire today. The northeast perimeter, where the fire spotted yesterday across the Arroyo-Seco Indians Road, is of particular concern because of the rugged terrain, poor access and continuous heavy fuels to the east. Structure protection engines will remain in place for the Santa Lucia Summer Home Tract.

Weather:
Temperature for today is predicted to be 101 degrees, with relative humidity at 7-10 percent and wind speed 10-15 mph out of the north/northeast

Threats/Concerns:
26 structures remain threatened, including residences in the Santa Lucia Summer Home Tract, the Escondido Campground, the Memorial Campground, the Monterey Sportsmen's Club (a large screened building and picnic tables) and the Indians Guard Station (a former fire station).
Working with the Forest Service, cabin owners in the Santa Lucia Tract have done a very good job of preparing the area around their homes by removing flammable debris and creating a 30 foot clearance. This will be a big help to firefighters should the fire reach the tract. The fire currently is about one quarter mile away. Structure protection engines are in place.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
