Memorial service - Matthew Richard Will - San Benito County Fairgrounds

California - A memorial service for a Cal Fire firefighter who died battling a blaze in Monterey County is scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday at the San Benito County Fairgrounds in Hollister. Matthew Richard Will, 30, of Hollister, a heavy fire equipment operator for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, died Oct. 9 when the bulldozer he was operating overturned.

Will, 30, was battling the Colorado Fire in Monterey County on Oct. 8 when his bulldozer rolled over. He was airlifted to San Jose Regional Medical Center and died the next morning from injuries sustained in the accident.

Will was assigned to Hollister Air Attack Base in the San Benito Monterey Unit, according to Cal Fire. He started with Cal Fire in May 2003 as a heavy fire equipment operator and recently graduated from the department's fire academy in Ione. Will is survived by his wife, Diana Will, son Trysten, 10, and daughter Elsie, 8.

Anyone wishing to attend the service is asked to arrive by noon.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
