* FLASH FLOOD WARNING FOR... SOUTH CENTRAL SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY IN SOUTHEAST CALIFORNIA... *

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN LAS VEGAS HAS ISSUED A * FLASH FLOOD WARNING FOR... SOUTH CENTRAL SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY IN SOUTHEAST CALIFORNIA... * UNTIL 130 PM PDT. * AT 1114 AM PDT... TRAINED WEATHER SPOTTERS REPORTED FLASH FLOODING FROM A THUNDERSTORM OVER THE WARNED AREA. * LOCATIONS IMPACTED INCLUDE... TWENTYNINE PALMS... TWENTYNINE PALMS MCAS AND WEST WIND AERO. A NEARLY STATIONARY THUNDERSTORM ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF TWENTYNINE PALMS WAS PRODUCING VERY HEAVY RAIN. SPOTTERS REPORT THE SOUTH SIDE OF TWENTYNINE PALMS AND TO THE WEST TOWARDS JOSHUA TREE AS EXPERIENCING FLOODING...WITH HIGHWAY 62 BEING COVERED WITH WATER WEST OF TWENTYNINE PALMS. THE STORM PRODUCING THE HEAVY RAINFALL IS NOT EXPECTED TO MOVE AND WILL CONTINUE TO PRODUCE HEAVY RAIN UNTIL AT LEAST 1230 PM PDT.

DO NOT DRIVE YOUR VEHICLE INTO AREAS WHERE WATER COVERS THE ROADWAY. THE WATER DEPTH MAY BE TOO GREAT TO ALLOW YOUR CAR TO CROSS SAFELY. TURN AROUND...DONT DROWN.

How fires get their names

Every year in California thousands of wildfires start throughout the state. In most cases, the dispatch center sending the initial resources to a wildland fire will designate a name for the fire, but the first on scene engine or fire official can also name the incident. Fires are usually named for the area in which they start – a geographical location, local landmark, street, lake, mountain, peak, etc. Quickly naming the fire provides responding fire resources with an additional locater, and allows fire officials to track and prioritize incidents by name. For example during the Southern California Fire Siege of 2003, the largest wildland fire in California history, the Cedar Fire in San Diego County, was named after the Cedar Creek Falls area where it started. The destructive Old Fire, which burned during the same time period in San Bernardino County, was named after the road along which it started - Old Waterman Canyon Road.
