Red flag warning now in effect - Los Angeles and Ventura counties

[EDIS] Red flag warning now in effect until midnight pdt sunday night for the mountains of los angeles and ventura counties... as well as the western portion of the antelope valley due to gusty onshore winds and low humidities

ANTELOPE VALLEY-

.A VERY WARM AND DRY AIR MASS REMAINS IN PLACE TODAY ACROSS THE MOUNTAINS AND ANTELOPE VALLEY...WITH SEVERAL LOCATIONS REPORTING LONG DURATIONS OF SINGLE DIGIT HUMIDITIES TODAY. THE LATEST COMPUTER MODEL PROJECTIONS INDICATE THIS VERY DRY AIR TO REMAIN IN PLACE ACROSS THE WARNING AREA THROUGH THIS EVENING...WITH A LONG DURATION OF SINGLE DIGIT HUMIDITIES EXPECTED. IN ADDITION... THERE WILL CONTINUE TO BE GUSTY ONSHORE WINDS ACROSS THE WARNING AREA...ESPECIALLY DURING THE AFTERNOON AND EVENING HOURS. ANOTHER THREAT WILL APPROACH THE MOUNTAINS AND DESERTS... ESPECIALLY MONDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY...WHEN MID LEVEL MOISTURE BRINGS A CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORMS AND DRY LIGHTNING. ... RED FLAG WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL MIDNIGHT PDT TONIGHT... A RED FLAG WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL MIDNIGHT PDT TONIGHT. TRIPLE DIGIT HEAT AND A LONG DURATION OF SINGLE DIGIT HUMIDITIES CONTINUE TODAY ACROSS THE ANTELOPE VALLEY. HUMIDITY VALUES ARE EXPECTED TO BE VERY POOR...WITH ANOTHER ROUND OF LONG DURATION SINGLE DIGIT HUMIDITIES TODAY. IN ADDITION TO THE LOW HUMIDITIES...THERE WILL BE SOUTHWEST TO WEST WINDS 20 TO 30 MPH WITH LOCAL GUSTS OVER 40 MPH IN THE AFTERNOON AND EVENING HOURS...MAINLY ACROSS WESTERN PORTIONS AND FOOTHILL LOCATIONS.

Instruction:
A RED FLAG WARNING MEANS THAT CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE EITHER OCCURRING NOW...OR WILL SHORTLY. A COMBINATION OF STRONG WINDS... LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY... AND WARM TEMPERATURES WILL CREATE EXPLOSIVE FIRE GROWTH POTENTIAL. PLEASE ADVISE THE APPROPRIATE OFFICIALS OR FIRE CREWS IN THE FIELD OF THIS RED FLAG WARNING.

How fires get their names

Every year in California thousands of wildfires start throughout the state. In most cases, the dispatch center sending the initial resources to a wildland fire will designate a name for the fire, but the first on scene engine or fire official can also name the incident. Fires are usually named for the area in which they start – a geographical location, local landmark, street, lake, mountain, peak, etc. Quickly naming the fire provides responding fire resources with an additional locater, and allows fire officials to track and prioritize incidents by name. For example during the Southern California Fire Siege of 2003, the largest wildland fire in California history, the Cedar Fire in San Diego County, was named after the Cedar Creek Falls area where it started. The destructive Old Fire, which burned during the same time period in San Bernardino County, was named after the road along which it started - Old Waterman Canyon Road.

CAL FIRE is the largest fire department in California and the second largest fire department in the United States. CDF - CAL FIRE Firefighters answer the call more than 300,000 times a year. CAL FIRE Firefighters make up the fire department for 30 of our 58 counties in California and more than 100 local communities. We have over 4,000 members within CAL FIRE and CAL FIRE is associated with the California Professional Firefighters (CPF) and the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF).
