NEWS - Salinas firefighters are getting a 12 percent pay hike

SALINAS, Calif. (Examiner) - City firefighters are getting a 12 percent pay hike as well as schedule changes over the next two years.

The City Council approved a memorandum of understanding raising firefighter salaries 6 percent retroactive to July 1, and another 6 percent in 2008.

Top firefighters will now earn $105,768 a year with new hires getting $60,324 annually.

The agreement reached last week also shifts firefighters to a "48/96" work schedule, in which firefighters work two consecutive 24-hour shifts followed by four days off. The previous schedule called for 24-hour shifts followed by two days off.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
