[EDIS] red flag warning remains in effect until 9 pm pdt this evening for the tulare and kern county mountains for very low

KERN COUNTY MOUNTAINS-TULARE COUNTY MOUNTAINS-

A RED FLAG WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 9 PM PDT THIS EVENING FOR THE TULARE AND KERN COUNTY MOUNTAINS DUE TO AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF VERY LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITIES. AREAS IN THIS WARNING INCLUDE SEQUOIA NATIONAL FOREST... SEQUOIA/KINGS CANYON NATIONAL PARK AND THE KERN COUNTY MOUNTAINS MAINLY EAST OF TEHACHAPI. STRONG HIGH PRESSURE OVER THE REGION IS BRINGING HOT TEMPERATURES AND VERY LOW HUMIDITIES OVER PORTIONS OF THE SOUTHERN SIERRA NEVADA AND KERN COUNTY MOUNTAINS. OVERNIGHT RELATIVE HUMIDITIES IN THESE AREAS REMAINED IN THE LOWER TEENS TO MID 20 PERCENT RANGE. HUMIDITIES ARE EXPECTED TO DROP BELOW 10 PERCENT FOR PERIODS OF 10 HOURS OR LONGER ACROSS THESE AREAS TODAY. OVERNIGHT HUMIDITY RECOVERY WILL BE POOR AGAIN TONIGHT.

A RED FLAG WARNING MEANS THAT CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE EITHER OCCURRING NOW...OR WILL SHORTLY. THESE VERY LOW HUMIDITIES WILL CREATE EXPLOSIVE FIRE GROWTH POTENTIAL. PLEASE ADVISE THE APPROPRIATE OFFICIALS OR FIRE CREWS IN THE FIELD OF THIS RED FLAG WARNING.

How fires get their names

Every year in California thousands of wildfires start throughout the state. In most cases, the dispatch center sending the initial resources to a wildland fire will designate a name for the fire, but the first on scene engine or fire official can also name the incident. Fires are usually named for the area in which they start – a geographical location, local landmark, street, lake, mountain, peak, etc. Quickly naming the fire provides responding fire resources with an additional locater, and allows fire officials to track and prioritize incidents by name. For example during the Southern California Fire Siege of 2003, the largest wildland fire in California history, the Cedar Fire in San Diego County, was named after the Cedar Creek Falls area where it started. The destructive Old Fire, which burned during the same time period in San Bernardino County, was named after the road along which it started - Old Waterman Canyon Road.
