UPDATE: NV-CCD-Larson:
Sustained high winds of 40+mph with gust to 65 mph on Tuesday, June 5 have thrown embers over the fire lines at the Larson Fire. It is currently estimated to be at 600-700 acres and has jumped U.S. Highway 395.

CHP has closed U.S. Highway 395 to through traffic between Holbrook Junction (NV State Route 208) and CA State Route 182 in Bridgeport.

The fire is an immediate threat to approximately 50 homes, with another 150 various structures in the area. Neighborhoods between Larson Lane to Cunningham Lane in Walker, California, have been evacuated. An evacuation center has been set up at Walker Community Center (next to the town park).

No structures have been reported lost at this time. The fire did burn over some equipment at a temporary firefighter camp behind Coleville High School, including a refrigerated storage unit and several Porta-Potties. No injuries have been reported.

Rowdy Muir's Type I Great Basin Incident Management Team has been ordered; the Sierra Front Type II Incident Management Team will take over fire operations this evening (6/5) and will manage the fire until the Type I team takes over incident responsibility.

Fourteen fire engines, seven handcrews, three watertenders, and one dozer are on-scene Airtankers and helicopters are temporarily grounded due to high winds along the Sierra Front.

An Incident Command Post is being set up at 1574 Larson Lane in Walker.

UPDATE:NV-CCD-Larson: June 6, 2007

Morning Fire Size-up: Incident Commander Marty Scheuerman reports this morning that some rain was received last night on the fire, it is cold (37 degrees at dawn this morning) and the winds have slowed, all causing the fire to "really lay down" overnight. All fire forces are out early working to contain the fire. Winds are expected to increase again this morning, but are not expected to be a gusty or erratic as on 6/5.

U.S. Highway 395 remains closed to through traffic between Holbrook Junction (NV State Route 208) and CA State Route 182 in Bridgeport. Fire officials hope to have the highway reopened later today (6/6), though a time has not yet been set.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
