Brush Fire Burns 80 Acres On Catalina Island

Brush Fire Burns 80 Acres On Catalina Island - News Story:

LOS ANGELES -- A brush fire burned about 80 acres of brush Thursday afternoon on Catalina Island.

No structures are threatened, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The fire is about two miles northwest of Avalon. Authorities said the fire is burning toward the city.

Ground crews and two water-dropping helicopters are at the location.

Capt. Mike Brown of the Los Angeles County Fire Department said the fire was reported at 12:30 p.m. five miles east of the airport on the island, which is more than 20 miles offshore. Sixty firefighters were en route.

'We're getting resources out there by boat and helicopter,' Brown said. 'We may get the Coast Guard involved.'

Much of the island is wilderness."

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer." --Abraham Lincoln
