Berkeley police arrested a man this morning after a bizarre burglary incident that left two firefighters and a female resident suffering from stab wounds.

Michael Kenard Cornelius, 53, allegedly broke into a woman's home in the 2500 block of Milvia Street around 1:45 a.m., according to Berkeley police officer Ed Galvan. Police received a 911 call about an in-progress burglary and when they arrived they found a woman suffering from non-life-threatening stab wounds she reportedly received after an altercation with a suspect later identified as Cornelius.

Galvan said she told police she had heard noises and woke up to find a man in her home. The woman provided police with a description of the man, although he had flee the scene.

About an hour-and-a-half later, police were called to Berkeley Fire Station No. 5 on Shattuck Avenue and Parker Street on reports that the same suspect had gained entrance into the firehouse. Firefighters approached Cornelius in hopes of apprehending him, although he lunged at them and stabbed two firefighters.

Ironically, station No. 5 firefighters were called to the first incident on Milvia Street, so they were aware of the outstanding suspect, according to Galvan.

Cornelius fled the firehouse on foot but was found a short ways away on Parker Street, hiding underneath a deck.

Both firefighters were treated and released for non-life-threatening injuries, Galvan said.

Cornelius allegedly used in the attack, but described it as "some type of knife-type tool."

Cornelius has been arrested on charges of burglary, assault with a deadly weapon and an enhancement charge for allegedly burglarizing a home while the occupant was present.
