NEU - VMP - Richards Ranch

Nevada-Yuba-Placer Unit - Vegetation Management Burn Scheduled for October 9th and 10th at Richards Ranch

Oct. 8, 2008 - The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) Nevada-Yuba-Placer Unit, in cooperation with the Richards Ranch, will be conducting a Vegetation Management Burn utilizing fire engines, handcrews, and a helicopter. Personnel and equipment will remain at the burn area throughout the evening and into the following day. CAL FIRE resources will continue to check the area for several days following the burn.

When: CAL FIRE is planning to conduct the Vegetation Management Burn Thursday, October 9th and Friday, October 10th. The burn will start around 8 a.m. and continue into the late afternoon. Smoke may be present through the weekend.
Where: This 300 acre Vegetation Management Burn will take place at the Richards Ranch north of Englebright Reservoir.
Why: CAL FIRE will conduct this Vegetation Management Burn in order to reduce overgrowth in the vegetation and provide a fire break that can be utilized in the future to stop or slow a major fire, Vegetation Management hazard reduction controlled burns serve multiple purposes: the continued training of fire personnel, management of noxious weeds, and improved wildlife habitat.
Air quality:
Smoke will be visible from State Highway 20, and the communities of Dobbins, Oregon House, Smartsville, Penn Valley, Lake Wildwood, French Corral, North San Juan, Grass Valley, and Nevada City.
