South Valley firefighters say it could be two months before one of their engines is back in service.

This Visalia fire engine was in the shop Monday. Over the weekend, police say a 16 year old boy took off in it while the firefighters were on a medical call. The Madera teen was arrested and charged with being under the influence. Firefighters say the teen crashed the truck into some light poles and drove with the emergency brake on. They estimate the damage will cost $30-thousand dollars.

Charlie Norman, Visalia Battalion Chief: "With the paint and body work it's probably going to be a month or two. With the transmission and the brake parts it's probably going to have to go into the shop in Northern California so it'll probably be out of service for a couple of months."

Firefighters say fire protection won't be affected, because the department has several reserve engines to use while this one gets fixed.

How fires get their names

Every year in California thousands of wildfires start throughout the state. In most cases, the dispatch center sending the initial resources to a wildland fire will designate a name for the fire, but the first on scene engine or fire official can also name the incident. Fires are usually named for the area in which they start – a geographical location, local landmark, street, lake, mountain, peak, etc. Quickly naming the fire provides responding fire resources with an additional locater, and allows fire officials to track and prioritize incidents by name. For example during the Southern California Fire Siege of 2003, the largest wildland fire in California history, the Cedar Fire in San Diego County, was named after the Cedar Creek Falls area where it started. The destructive Old Fire, which burned during the same time period in San Bernardino County, was named after the road along which it started - Old Waterman Canyon Road.
