California has almost every natural disaster imaginable—wildfire, earthquakes, and mudslides. The environment is why the state is worldwide leader in rescuing people from danger. The Chico Fire Department and Cal Fire spent some of the week teaching a small group of Japanese rescue instructors how to save people from danger. They went through some cliff rescue training sessions in which a pulley is used to lift a man out of danger.
Some of the learning takes awhile because words get lost in translation, but the visitors say they have learned a lot. “The US rescue standard is much higher than Japan,” Takeaharo Sato told Action News, “So we learn a lot of things from the US which is why I bring students here. The standard is higher, especially the California standard.”
The group will return to their homeland on Wednesday.
