Helitack 408 from Keene performs rescue operation in California City
CALIFORNIA CITY, CA –At approximately 4:27 a.m., on Saturday, January 19th 2008, Kern County Fire Department Helicopter 408 and the crew from Station 14, assisted the California City Fire Department in rescuing a man injured in an open desert area near Borax Bill Park in California City.
An adult male sustained moderate to major injuries when he was thrown from an all-terrain vehicle (quad) after it rolled down a hill. Members of the California City Fire and Police Department and the crew from KCFD Station 14 hiked into the isolated area and were able to locate and stabilize the victim, but could not safety transport him on foot. Due to the remote area, duration of exposure to the elements and the severity of injuries, the rescue crews requested a helicopter to hoist the victim to an area of safety.
Within 20 minuets of take-off from its home base in Keene, the KCFD helicopter crew used night vision goggles to locate the scene of the accident. After hoisting the victim to safety, the KCFD crew flew him to California City Airport where he was transferred to Mercy Air Ambulance.
Mercy Air Ambulance transported him to a Kern County hospital for treatment.

****REMINDER**** Every fire has the ability to be catastrophic. The wildland fire management environment has profoundly changed. Growing numbers of communities, across the nation, are experiencing longer fire seasons; more frequent, bigger, and more severe, fires are a real threat. Be careful with all campfires and equipment.
